Definition
The Elementary Sports Club is one of two simplified sports-club formats regulated by Spanish regional law (it is not a national figure — each Comunidad Autónoma legislates it). Compared to a full sports association, its set-up is faster: a small number of founding members (typically 3-5 depending on the region), short statutes and a single registration in the regional registry of sports entities.
The trade-off is reduced legal capacity: it usually cannot own real estate as an entity, federated competition participation is limited, and in some regions it cannot directly hire employees. In practice it works well for neighbourhood clubs, small school programmes or recreational sections that do not aim for high-level competition.
When does it apply?
Use it when a group of people wants to formalise sports practice without the administrative load of a full association. Common in youth football clubs with a single team, family-run padel academies or athletics sections inside a parents' association. The choice between Elementary, Basic or Association depends on expected size, whether you'll federate teams, whether you'll employ staff, and your regional law.
Practical example
Common mistakes
- Assuming Elementary = no obligations: even the simplest format requires a member registry, annual general meeting and yearly accounts.
- Skipping regional registration: without registry inscription you cannot open a bank account in the club's name or sign contracts as an entity.
- Thinking it's the same across all regions: every Comunidad Autónoma sets its own requirements (member count, statute content, fees).
- Confusing it with the ordinary Sports Association: the association follows national law (Ley 1/2002); the elementary club is a regional figure with its own rules.
