Definition
A Sports Association is the result of applying Spain's Ley Orgánica 1/2002 (Right of Association) to an entity whose purpose is sport. It is a non-profit national-level association with its own statutes, governing bodies (general meeting + board) and mandatory books. It is filed in the National Registry of Associations or in the regional registry of associations — not in the regional registry of sports entities.
Unlike the regional Elementary or Basic Sports Club, it doesn't automatically receive the specific advantages of regional sports legislation (certain grants, federated participation under particular conditions). On the other hand, its statutes can be very comprehensive and administrative bodies and banks are very familiar with the form.
When does it apply?
Use it when founding members prefer the national framework out of familiarity (many parent associations and cultural groups already follow Ley 1/2002), when the sports activity coexists with other purposes (cultural, social), or when your region offers no significant advantages to the elementary/basic club. For many amateur clubs the choice is more administrative than substantive.
