Sports Association (Asociación Deportiva)

Non-profit national-level association under Spain's Organic Law 1/2002, valid for sports purposes but not specifically regulated by regional sports law.

Definition

A Sports Association is the result of applying Spain's Ley Orgánica 1/2002 (Right of Association) to an entity whose purpose is sport. It is a non-profit national-level association with its own statutes, governing bodies (general meeting + board) and mandatory books. It is filed in the National Registry of Associations or in the regional registry of associations — not in the regional registry of sports entities.

Unlike the regional Elementary or Basic Sports Club, it doesn't automatically receive the specific advantages of regional sports legislation (certain grants, federated participation under particular conditions). On the other hand, its statutes can be very comprehensive and administrative bodies and banks are very familiar with the form.

When does it apply?

Use it when founding members prefer the national framework out of familiarity (many parent associations and cultural groups already follow Ley 1/2002), when the sports activity coexists with other purposes (cultural, social), or when your region offers no significant advantages to the elementary/basic club. For many amateur clubs the choice is more administrative than substantive.

Practical example

Asociación Deportiva y Cultural Río Segura groups hiking, kayaking and a children's theatre club. The mixed sports + cultural purpose led them to choose a Ley 1/2002 association rather than a sports club: its statutory purpose covers non-strictly-sport activities, which the regional sports registry would have rejected. Members pay an annual fee, elect a board every four years and approve accounts at the annual meeting.
