Definition
An amateur transfer is the club change of a non-professional player. Unlike professional football or basketball (with compensations, contracts and transfer markets), in Spanish amateur sport the transfer is mostly administrative: the source club processes the player's removal and the new club processes the registration. There are generally no economic rights between amateur clubs.
Formalised before the corresponding federation with: 1) removal from the previous club (signed by the club or, if disputed, mediated by the federation if the player evidences their will), 2) registration with the new club via a new card. Federation deadlines apply: additions and removals are usually open until a certain date (February or March in many federations), after which the market closes for the season.
When does it apply?
Applies when an amateur player wants to change clubs. Typical reasons: city move for studies, better sporting fit elsewhere, conflicts, opportunity to play a higher category. Best practice is to communicate the decision in advance and respect the sporting cycle (change between seasons, not mid-season except for justified cause).
Practical example
Common mistakes
- Skipping the removal step: registration at the new club is blocked if the exit isn't on file.
- Changing mid-season without cause: federations may not authorise it.
- Asking for economic rights from the new club: not applicable in amateur sport except under regulated exceptions.
- Not communicating deadlines to player and family: they can miss the whole season.
